Many people have teeth that are discolored from coffee, tea, tobacco, or just plain age. A lot of people avoid whitening their teeth because they have heard incorrect or incomplete information. Here are 5 common misconceptions about teeth whitening that lead people to believe that they are stuck with yellow teeth. 
  1. Teeth whitening is "unnatural." Many people look for natural teeth whitening methods in an effort to avoid toxic chemicals. The truth is that most teeth bleaching are accomplished with either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These are both natural oxidizing agents, and most people have a bottle of peroxide somewhere in their bathroom or kitchen. Power-bleaching or laser-bleaching is accomplished with peroxide and ultraviolet light. Whether you whiten your teeth over several weeks with an at-home kit, or visit your dentist for a 45-minute super-whitening session, your teeth aren't going to see anything more toxic than peroxide and sunlight.
  2. Teeth whitening is expensive. While professional whitening can be expensive, most people don't need it. At-home kits can be as effective as professional treatments, and the effects can even last longer. The most effective bleaching kits use custom-fitted trays, and you can even have your dentist create trays for you to use at home. Unfortunately, certain tooth discolorations require professional removal, including tetracycline stains and deep tobacco stains.
  3. Whitening damages your teeth. Since dentists are the ones doing the power-bleaching, they have studied the effects very carefully. Although early studies showed that bleaching has some effect on the enamel, the professionals have since determined that the effect is minimal. Basically bleaching your teeth damages your teeth a tiny bit, but it would only cause a problem if you were planning to live 200 years and bleach your teeth annually
  4. Whitening is painful. This is another misconception that is probably based on the results of power-bleaching. It's true that whitening your teeth many shades over the course of an hour can cause sensitivity that can feel like explosives going off inside your mouth. However, home whitening kits and methods that take several days or weeks do not have the same results. The higher the concentration of peroxide you put on your teeth, the more likely they are to become sensitive. Stick to lower concentrations that take a little longer and you'll be less likely to feel any pain.
  5. The effects of whitening are short-lived. If you have ever had a power-bleaching session or known someone who did, you might be aware of the bounce-back effect. One-hour bleaching sessions leave the teeth shockingly white, and also dehydrate the teeth. As the teeth re-hydrates, they get darker again. One of the 5 common misconceptions about teeth whitening is that it doesn't last. With the right method and good dental hygiene, you can get your teeth white and keep them white, even if you never set foot inside a dentist's office.
