How to End Stress (Really!)

Recent studies completed by a research team led by Carnegie Mellon University's Sheldon Cohen has found a direct correlation between chronic psychological stress and the body's immune system. Simply put, the research suggests that chronic stress reduces the body's ability to fight disease and disrupts its ability to regulate inflammation, which can promote the progression and development of disease.
These findings serve to scientifically confirm what traditional healers have held for many years: our physical health is a function of our psychological / spiritual health.
As an engineering scientist with a Master's Degree from the University of Minnesota, I appreciate the importance of having hard data to confirm gut assumptions. At a gut level, we know stress is not good for us. But how do we get to the root cause of stress to remove it from our experience? Is this even possible?
What is Stress?
Stress is essentially mental or physical strain due to either an external or internal pressure. Common to all forms of stress is a disruption in the proper functioning of a system. A sprained ankle, for example, could render a world-class athlete incapable of the simple act of walking. Similarly, when internal conditions like fear and worry take root in our minds, we experience different degrees of inner stress. Our thoughts become beclouded; our judgment diminishes. Our entire being becomes overwhelmed by a disempowering feeling of fear. The chemical composition of our body literally loses its balance, which can and does cause an array of illnesses. Stress is deadly, perhaps the deadliest thing around. Stress should be avoided at all cost. It has no value. Zero.
Life's Challenges
Life is inherently challenging to be sure, but it need not be stressful. Think of it like this: the gifted athlete who is training for the Olympics is faced with challenges each day he practices. He has the challenge of completing difficult drills over and over again. He works his butt off in order to be the best. Challenges, viewed correctly, are needed to help us be better - to help us grow. When we face a challenge with the right attitude, we are forced to become bigger, stronger, faster... some grander version of ourselves in order to overcome the challenge. This has immense benefits to our physical and spiritual development.
But what about sudden, tragic events like the death of a loved-one or the loss of a job? How can we possibly cope with these events without experiencing some level of inner stress? It is important for us to realize that stress is not the same as concern or grief. Grieving the loss of a loved-one is a natural human response that does not necessarily create inner stress. When we grieve, we may experience bouts of intense sadness, may cry and even feel hopeless for a time. Similarly, the loss of a job may cause us to feel insecure or angry. Our emotions, however intense, do not cause a stress response within our bodies and minds unless the emotions become entrenched, repetitive and colored by a disempowering sense of fear. Fear is at the root of chronic stress.
Moreover, when dealing with truly stressful circumstances (being late for work and not being able to find your keys are not in this category) like the loss of a job or the death of a loved-one, we should consider that our lives have a deeper, spiritual dimension. Whether or not one believes in a spiritual dimension there is much scientific evidence that suggests that our reality is so much more than we imagine. If the great spiritual Educators of humanity are correct, then the brief span of our years here on earth is not the complete story of our existence. Life - conscious life - continues after physical death. A spiritually sensitized person has the capacity to perceive the deeper meaning in every experience. This expanded awareness can help shield us from chronic stress in even the most tragic of circumstances.
Putting an End to Stress
Firstly, let's make sure we realize that no-one or no thing can stress us out. We manufacture our own stress. Remember that. You have the copyright and patent to your stress. No-one other than you can create your stress. If we manufacture our own stress (believe me, we do) then we can do away with it altogether. Yes! It is possible.
Here are some tips to help you live a stress-free life:
1. Never again blame anything that happens outside of you for your stress. Take full responsibility for your internal state. If you feel stressed-out, realize that you are manufacturing the stress based on your perceptions. Stress is never imposed from without; it always arises from within.
2. Begin a meditative practice right away. Many of us living in the West are afraid of meditation. We think it's some strange Eastern practice that only monks do. If you think like this, wake up! Meditation is nothing more than quieting the mind for a period. This has scientifically proven beneficial effects (not the least of which is reducing stress).
3. Become more aware of the moments when you feel stressful and ask yourself: What is causing my stress? And, what is the benefit of me being stressed right now? You will begin to realize (if you do this routinely) that your stress is manufactured by you and that it is not helping you. It is very likely it is making you sick, causing you to have headaches and hijacking your sleep. Remember, your stress has no value.
4. Discover your passion and take action - I know this is not so simple, but believe me when I tell you that persons who are truly passionate about what they do are able to face many challenges without being overwhelmed by stress. Stress is not a sign of being busy, it is a sign of being lost internally. When your internal compass is off, just about anything - any unexpected change, any challenge, any discomfort - is perceived as a threat and causes stress. Becoming balance within is the panacea for stress. Attaining inner balance certainly does not remove life's challenges - nothing can - but it allows us to face challenges without becoming stressed (i.e. overwhelmed by fear).

Advanced High Intensity Training Variables

In previous articles I explained in great detail the many different HIT or high intensity techniques that are used to increase intensity during bodybuilding training to dramatically increase muscle size and strength.

Variables such as forced reps, negatives, negative-accentuated, omni-contraction, rest-pause and many others were included in routines that reward the bodybuilder with much more rapid gains than traditional, lower intensity programs will.

One of the techniques, Rolling Static Partials, was utilized in several of the routines. Instead of rehashing all of the variables explained in my previous article this article is going to focus on my Rolling Static Partials variable, explaining it in more detail.

What makes this HIT variable so effective? Each of the other variables effect the muscles being trained in a unique way. Rolling Static Partials combine the benefits of all three.

Burn reps increase the intensity by quickly accelerating demands on the muscle by grinding out additional short reps after the trainee is no longer capable of completing more full reps.

Partials, or zone reps, focus on maximizing effort on different portions of an exercise and enable the lifter to hit muscular failure more than once during an exercise. There are endless variations on zones in an exercise so this variable allows one to train a muscle with what amounts to a new exercise every session if desired.

Super-X Contractions is a versatile technique, which like zone partials, offers nearly limitless variations. For example, holds can be done at the sticking point of an exercise or at the portion, or zone, where you are strongest. TOC, or time under contraction, can be 1-40 seconds in duration depending on the desired effect. This is one of the most, if not the most intense variable, making it one of the most productive for muscle-building and strength development.

Partial Reps

One of the most effective variables for overcoming and training beyond sticking points in an exercise, whether its one of the power lifts or a regular training exercise, is partial reps. This is due to its ability to isolate and train an individual portion of a movement and build its strength. This in turn enables heavier weights to be used and additional strength to be built.

Another reason this technique is so effective is the multiple times failure is achieved during a set. When an exercise is done in the traditional way failure is attained once. When partials are used each zone is taken to failure, increasing total set failure 3-6 times! Remember the success of a set, and training for that matter, is the amount of effort put forth. If sets aren't taken to failure then the results obtained will be substantially less than what is possible.

The variations within a partial set are virtually unlimited. A rep can be divided in half, thirds, quarters or any combination. A rep can be restricted to a very limited range and further divided into training zones. As you can see the opportunities are unlimited when it comes to this technique.

Repairing defects in free weight exercises

One of the problems with free weights is the imperfect leverage the barbell or dumbbell gives during an exercise. There are points in an exercise where the barbell gives ideal resistance but the angles vary greatly and resistance levels change dramatically throughout. Properly calibrated weight machines fix this problem by varying the resistance level as the leverage changes to maintain the proper workload for a given muscle. Partial reps allow us to remedy the leverage problem by changing the weight for each zone mimicking the action of high quality weight machines.

Lets break down a dumbbell curl and see how we can improve it by zone training. If you typically use 50 pounds in the dumbbell curl do 8 reps in the bottom third zone to failure. Immediately reduce the weight to 40 lbs and do as many reps to failure as you can in the middle third. Reduce the weight further to 30 lbs and do as many reps as you can do in the upper zone.

As you can see, we have altered the weight in a similar way that a weight machine does to provide an even resistance level throughout the curl, increasing its effectiveness.

This principle can be used in any free weight exercise where there are mechanical disadvantages.

Rolling Static Partials are performed in the following way:

Bench Press- 12 reps

Press the bar up 1/3rd of the way and hold for 10 seconds before pressing the bar to mid-point. Do a series of short 2-4 inch fast pulsing reps before doing 4 reps in the top zone of the lift. Continue doing random holds, burn reps and partial reps until you have completed a total of 12 reps.

This variable can be used with any exercise to break through sticking points and allow heavier weights to be used during the traditional performance of an exercise.

Give this a try and you will surely build more muscle and strength faster than before.

Norovirus Symptoms

It was December in 2012, where I caught, which many people can easily catch called "Norovirus". I first never knew what it was but it was something that I will never forget. I just wanted to share exactly what norovirus is and what it does when someone gets infected.
The Norovirus is an infection that causes and forces you to vomit, have diarrhea, nausea, and have abdominal pain. It is very easy to catch, highly contagious, and spreads very quickly. It is easy transferred from one person to the next. People who have norovirus are most contagious when they are sick but can still transfer the virus even three days after they have recovered from the worst of the symptoms.
The Norvirus is often called a stomach bug in which, people most often highly-catch it inside nursing homes, dirty bathrooms, day care centers and, cruise ships. These symptoms typically last one to three days. Other symptoms include a fever, chills, coughing, headache and body aches.
Norovirus is not the same as the flu. It's easy for people with these symptoms to be confused that may believe they have food poisoning or the stomach flu. You can also get sick eating any food a person with the virus has touched. You can get also get the norovirus from eating contaminated food.
Most common contaminated foods are fresh fruit, shellfish, or any other raw foods. Any food served raw or handled by an infected person after being cooked can get contaminated. Food can also be easily contaminated if it has been sitting out for hours, such as places on a buffet.
There is no medicine or vaccine to help treat norovirus, but most people recover fully without treatment. However, it is very important for people who have norovirus to take plenty of fluids, especially water, hot tea, soup, and rest.
Ways you can help prevent norovirus is do not share food or utensils with people who are sick. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before preparing or handling food and after using the bathroom. Be aware that hand sanitizers "WILL NOT" help.
If someone around you is sick, be sure to wipe down any surfaces they touch with bleach. Also wipe down thoroughly around the toilet and places in the bathroom where others use most.
Make sure to wash an infected person's clothes thoroughly. Be sure to change someone's sheets and towels as soon A.S.A.P if someone gets sick in bed, etc.
Although norovirus is very easy to catch and spreads super fast, everyone still needs to be aware about the real effects and how it is catchable.

Yoga for Pain

Is Yoga really a cure for pain? What kind of Yoga teacher should you visit for pain management? What style of Yoga would be best, if you are constantly feeling pain? In which cases would Yoga not be advisable for students in severe pain? Let's look at some pain management solutions that Yoga has to offer.
Is Yoga really a cure for pain? Many Yoga students swear by the results they have received from regularly attending Yoga classes, two or three times per week. In truth, Yoga has its limits - just like any diet. Can you imagine if you were going to diet wisely once a week? You can imagine the results.
Therefore, the real dilemma, with Yoga practice, is getting a student to practice on a regular basis. Also, Yoga, much like any prescription drug, cannot promise to be a "cure-all" for every ailment. Yoga can promise to be a diversion from pain and help students to manage it better, with no adverse side effects.
The lifestyle changes that occur after regularly practicing Yoga, will cause Yoga students to evaluate everything they do, and everything they eat. Yoga is not just another exercise program or some fad that just came along within the least decade. According to some archaeological findings, Yoga has been in existence for over 5000 years. Show me an exercise fad with those credentials!
What kind of Yoga teacher should you visit for pain management? The Yoga teacher you select, for pain management, should be knowledgeable in the use of props. The prospective Yoga teacher should understand that each posture can be modified for the needs of the specific student. In other words, if you detect a "it's my way or the highway" attitude, get as far away from that Yoga teacher as you can.
The most important component in a Yoga teacher's personality, who helps students with ailments, is compassion. If you don't see, feel, or hear any compassion, this is the wrong match for your needs. Yoga can be customized for the specific needs of students. The Yoga teacher, who has not yet felt any pain, is going to have less empathy for students who are in pain. So, an "elite" Yoga teacher, who can perform every asana imaginable, and has the body of a competing Olympic gymnast, may not exactly understand your pain.
What style of Yoga would be best, if you are constantly feeling pain? There are a number of styles to consider that can be easily customized for your specific needs. Here are a few to consider: Restorative Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Yoga Therapy, and Tri-Yoga. Please keep in mind that these styles will vary according to the Yoga teacher's interpretation of the style's principles.
In which cases would Yoga not be advisable for students in severe pain? Sometimes, physicians do not recommend Yoga in cases of severe pain, such as in the case of extremely severe arthritis. The reasoning is that any movement will cause a great deal of pain in the joints. If your physician tells you not to practice a gentle form of Yoga, you should at least ask why. If you are not satisfied with the answer, you should seek a second opinion.
If you are feeling pain, and want to take positive action, you should consult your physician, and if agreed by your physician, explore your options with a local Yoga teacher, who teaches a gentle style and has a history of helping Yoga students with ailments.

5 Effective Low Back Pain Exercises

Many adults suffer from low back pain, which is usually caused by injury, overuse or muscle strain. Seeking proper treatment and engaging in a well-rounded exercise program (e.g. strength, cardio & flexibility) can help you stay mobile for years to come. To improve low back pain, stay active and refrain from activities and positions that may worsen back pain. Gradually begin gentle strengthening and stretching exercises for your back, legs and abdominal muscles when the acute pain has dissipated. Strength and flexibility exercises will not only help you recover faster and prevent reinjury to your back, but it may also reduce low back pain and decrease the chance of long-term disability. You can do many low back exercises at home without any special equipment. Talk to your physical therapist or doctor before you begin an exercise program, and do not perform any exercises that can increase low back pain.
Cat Camel
The cat camel exercise helps to ward off sciatica and prevent back pain. When you perform this exercise, you will extend your spine through a full range of motion to help alleviate any existing back pain,, as well. First, you need to get down onto your hands and knees with your lower back in an arched position. Lower your head down in between your shoulders and lift your upper back up towards the ceiling until rounded, and then slowly return to the start position. Do 12 to 15 repetitions.
Heel Slides
Heel slides are a simple rehab exercise for the low back. Begin by lying on your back, and then slowly bend and straighten your knee. Do 10 repetitions.
Piriformis Muscle Stretch
The piriformis muscle runs from the back of the thigh bone (femur) to the base of the spine (sacrum). When this muscle gets too tight, it can lead to sciatic nerve problems. To perform this stretch, lie flat on your back and bend both knees. Cross the right knee over the left knee and place both hands under the left knee (lower leg), and then gently pull up toward your chest until you feel a good stretch in the glute area (buttock muscles). Hold for 20 to 30 seconds and then cross the left knee over the right knee and repeat. This exercise can be done one to three times per day.
Abdominal Muscle Strengthening
Strong abdominal muscles help to support the low back. Begin this exercise by lying on your back with both knees bent and feet shoulder-width apart. Contract your abs toward the spine, while keeping your spine in a neutral position. Next, breathe out and reach toward the ceiling, lifting your head and shoulder blades off the floor. Hold for 2 to 3 seconds, breathe in and return to start position. Repeat until fatigued or can no longer maintain a neutral spine. Do this exercise one time per day, 3-4 days per week.
Hamstring Stretch
Your hamstrings are located behind your thigh (or quadricep) muscles, and they help your buttock muscles extend the hip and are responsible for bending the knee. When your hamstrings get tight, it becomes extremely difficult (if not impossible) to sit up straight, which can increase your risk of degenerative disc disease, low back pain and other back issues. To stretch the hamstrings, lie in the supine position (on back) and bend your right leg to a 90-degree angle and grasp the leg behind the knee. Slowly straighten your right leg, with the toes pointed toward you, and give your hamstring a gentle stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and then switch to the left leg. Repeat 4 to 5 times on each side, and try to do this exercise 2 times per day.

Caralluma Actives Review - Get The Facts Here

You've probably heard of Caralluma Actives by now and may well be wondering whether it's effective or not at helping you lose weight. This review is going to breakdown the facts for you and dispel any myths you may have read. The truth is, there any so many myths and misinformation posted on the Internet on just about every weight loss supplement, my goal is to give you the truth and help you make an educated decision on whether to get the Caralluma Actives supplement.
Some basic facts about Caralluma Actives:
  • It's active ingredient is derived from a plant (called Caralluma Fimbriata)
  • It's an appetite suppressant as opposed to your normal run of the mill weight loss supplements
  • It's formula has been designed to help you combat cravings and clean up your diet
  • Weight loss forums and communities have overall received it positively and a lot of users reported good results when taking it
Caralluma Actives works differently to most other supplements on the market; it doesn't have any magical ingredients that will start breaking down fat cells. Instead, its active ingredient is well known to suppress hunger and stop cravings, in particular for snacking in between meals. It's also been commonly reported to reduce meal and portion sizes.
There are a few scientific studies to back up the claims, some of them from well-established research bodies such as the AAPS (American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.) The studies themselves have detailed results and are far from 'junk science'
So, let's breakdown what happens when you take Caralluma Actives. Most people have reported from day one a decrease in their appetite and fewer cravings throughout the day. They have gone on to show food logs from before and after and showed a reduction in calories. These vary from a few hundred, to in some cases over a thousand (depending on the user and their weight.)
The rest is self-explanatory, but since the users are eating less, as a result they lose weight. The figures themselves depend on a lot of factors but on average most users will lose a few pounds a week, with some cases of over five pounds per week (some extreme cases have shown up to ten pounds a week.)
The great thing about Caralluma Actives is that it helps you clean up your diet and not only does this help you lose weight, but also has a positive effect on your general health, your appearance and energy levels. Less snacking means less insulin spikes and less periods of feeling sluggish and lethargic.
In summary, Caralluma Actives has been shown to have a positive effect on weight loss in the vast majority of users; its simple formula offers a straight forward and no nonsense way of losing weight. With the weight loss market riddled with gimmicks and clever advertising, it's a refreshing change to see a supplement like Caralluma Actives.
Read this Caralluma Actives Review from a personal trainer who gave one of his clients a four week trial with the supplement. The results will surprise you!

A Cellulite Cure - How to Get Rid of Cellulite

Are you a middle-aged woman? Then there is a good chance that you may be affected by cellulite. If not then you are among the minority, as most women in their 40's, 50's and 60's have cellulite deposits in their body. This doesn't mean that cellulite is not found among young girls or guys. They are also affected by this problem, but the proportion is much less.
Now let us know what cellulite is. The distasteful condition beneath the skin is referred to as cellulite. This condition gives an orange-peel like appearance to the tissues of the affected area. You will have cellulite mostly in the lower portion of the body (hips, thighs etc), but it is also quite common in the upper arms and the breasts. People have some vague ideas about cellulite. The majority thinks that cellulite disturbs only the fat individuals, but the fact is different. Sporty women without any additional body weight may also be affected by cellulite.
Now you know what cellulite is. But the most important part i.e. the answer to 'how to get rid of cellulite' is till missing. Let us discuss it in brief.
The Natural Procedures
A combination of balanced diet and proper exercising schedule can help you to get rid of cellulite. Consult a dietitian and arrange an anti-cellulite diet chart. These diets generally contain a lot of fibers and vitamins and omit all the toxins like sugar, tea, coffee carbonated drinks etc. The diet should not include a higher percentage of fat.
Exercising also sometimes helps in reducing cellulite. This process helps a lot as it boosts the blood circulation restores the subcutaneous lipid layer. But exercises meant for cellulite reduction are quite hard to perform. You will have to work out for hours in the gym to achieve the desired results.
The most important thing about doing cellulite reducing exercises is concentrating on the parts affected by cellulite. Some of the most common parts are thighs, upper arms, hips, and breasts. The aerobic exercises are the best cure for the cellulite. These exercises increase the heart rate and help you to burn a lot of calories.
If you can follow this chart along with regular aerobic exercises, reducing the cellulite deposits will not be a problem for you anymore. The best thing about this combination is that it is entirely natural and beneficial if performed under the supervision of experts.
The Artificial Procedures
The primary artificial method adapted for getting rid of cellulite is the laser treatment. This treatment is done using the laser rays and is regarded as the most effective cure of cellulite. You will not have to worry about the outcome of this operation as it involves negligible risk. Another artificial method is the treatment done by means of radio waves. This is also very effective for eliminating cellulite deposits, but not as much as the laser treatment.

Massages Provide Multiple Benefits to Your Mind and Body

There are a lot of reasons to consider massage as part of any whole body care. It should not be seen as a luxury treatment and should instead be seen as providing a long list of health and wellness benefits. For example:
• Massage allows the body to handle toxins properly;
• Massage induces muscles to relax and heal;
• Massage eliminates tension that you may not even realize you have; and
• Massage is similar to meditation in that it asks you to release "noisy" thoughts.
Additionally, there are the many benefits of "touch". A report by CNN demonstrated that "touching makes you healthier". Though the story did say that something as simple as a squeeze of the hand or hug was enough to lower the blood pressure to helping immune function, the use of massage was particularly cited for its ability to help someone "unwind" and to cause the hormone known as cortisol to decline. All of these things add up to an improved state of mind and an even better state of health and vitality.
How to Use It
How do you begin using massage to improve your health or as part of a whole body wellness plan? It doesn't have to be something that breaks the bank. In fact, the CNN pointed out that using one of the fast massage kiosks at the mall will do the trick. You can also find special massage chairs that cost only a few coins to deliver a few minutes of bliss.
If you are seriously committed to using it to treat specific conditions, however, you will want to find yourself a massage professional. And you do want to be sure that they are certified and legally able to practice the techniques they advertise.
There are many kinds of massage, and many new variations being introduced each year. However, the most common include deep tissue, Swedish, hot stone massage, and even maternity massage.
You need to speak with your provider about the expected outcome of the therapy in order to be sure it is providing you with what you need.
A Good Example
Consider one woman who struggled with edema in the legs. This was due to a few health issues and medications. She made a point of exercising and wearing compression socks, but still her legs and feet struggled to move the fluid out. This all had to do with lymphatic channels and circulation. She found a massage therapist who understood that it was a time for superficial massage rather than deep tissue. By getting two massages of this kind each week, it helped her body to really manage the movement of lymph from the legs, and it helped the woman to feel much better and more energized.
Whole body care is not rocket science, but a lot of people overlook the many profound benefits of regular massage. Whether you use the mall kiosk, buy rollers and pads to tackle it as a "DIY" venture, or hire a professional, you will gain many health benefits from this practice.

Face Muscle Exercises

If you are reading this, you have probably heard of face exercises: the safest and most natural way to get a facelift. What is really interesting about face exercises is that you don't need a doctor to get clearance for this type of exercise.
You just go ahead and do it, and you will reap all of the benefits of your new efforts at looking young and vibrant. The only real requirement for this type of exercise is consistency, because if you want visible results in a shorter period of time, you need to work on those problem regions as often as possible.
Face exercises have been used by countless individuals for many decades now. They are not usually endorsed on television, in magazines, and in other printed publications, but that doesn't mean that they are not effective.
It simply means that face exercises can survive the test of time through sheer effectiveness, and not seasonal hype. Another interesting fact about face exercises is that you can easily perform the movements at home, without the aid of therapists. This is one type of facelift that won't necessitate a visit to the doctor, too!
If you are excited about face exercises, you are in luck, because today I am going to be sharing with you some face exercises that will help tone your face so you will have a more youthful appearance in a few weeks' time. The first exercise that I want to teach you will help tone the muscles surrounding your eyes. These muscles are closely connected with the muscles that animate the forehead, so we are going to limit the movement by positioning the source of resistance at strategic points.
If you have ever seen a bodybuilder before, or even someone who just lifts weights at the gym, you will notice that the focal point of an exercise is usually the source of resistance. Resistance is the element that drives the body to exert effort to counteract the resistance.
Can you use resistance with the facial regions? The answer is a resounding yes. In this first exercise, you will see just how easy it is to utilize resistance, even without fancy weights and contraptions. To begin this exercise, simply place your index finger and middle finger at the center points of your brows. You will find bony prominences at these areas. Just let your fingertips rest on these bony prominences. Press down just a little to add a hint of resistance.
When your fingers are at the target positions, I want you to try to fight the resistance by moving your eyebrows upward. So, the resistance of the fingers is downward, and the movement of your ocular muscles will be upward. Try to fight the upward movement with equal resistance. Perform this exercise for at least ten minutes to really tone and condition those ocular muscles.
The next exercise will help stimulate all of the muscles of the face. Begin this exercise by frowning and, as you frown, let your lips move downward as if they were trying to frown as well. Hold this position for a few moments before relaxing. Performing controlled frowning helps muscle tone and also helps reduce lines on the face.

Bionic Teeth

The practice of using implants to replace missing teeth is catching on quickly. The growing popularity of this procedure is due to all of media cover implants have received over the last few years. Most of the patients I see seem to have some understanding of the use of implants and their benefits. It is probably the most important advancement in dentistry in the last twenty years, and still improving daily.
The most remarkable improvements are in the ease of placement and the predictability of patient outcome, which has been the major influence behind the movement of this procedure from the oral surgeon's office to general dentist's practice. Patients cautiously nod when I tell them that placing an implant is usually easier than removing a tooth- from both the dentist and patient's perspective. But in spite the patient's doubts about this statement almost every time the patient reports that they had very little pain afterwards, often needing no pain medication.
As the word spreads and people become better informed about implant, this procedure will become an even more popular. I have had several patients ask to have their fixed bridges replaced with implants, and other patients asking to forego the traditional root canal and crown procedures and just remove the tooth and place an implant (and many well-respected dentists are proposing this as well). Patients with dentures are having implants done more frequently as the procedure becomes more affordable.
I won't get into the technical aspects of implants in this column because there is plenty of information about the procedures on the internet. Basically, a small titanium cylinder is placed into the area and allowed to fuse with the bone over several months. In some instances there is no need to wait and the restoration can be immediately placed, these one day implants will be discussed at another time. The restoration of an implant after it has fuses with the bone is even less complicated than traditional crowns-and it involves NO DRILLING!
If you are not familiar with implants, you should learn more about them. Your general dentist can explain all of the pros and cons for your individual situation. Most dentists who do dental surgery are capable of placing implants, but it requires a large investment in equipment, supplies, and education. If your dentist does not place implants, they will be able to refer you to someone who does.

Grapeseed Oil: Simple, Natural Skincare

Grapeseed oil has long been used as an ingredient in skincare, both on its own as well as with other ingredients. The oil is found in many of today's known skincare brands, including moisturizers, serums and haircare products. What makes this oil special is its versatility and the fact that it is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin.
Grapeseed oil is perfect if you are looking for simple, natural skincare. You can use it straight from the bottle to moisturize, and it's anti-inflammatory properties can sooth red and irritated skin.
This lightweight oil is rich in anti-oxidants, proteins and amino acids. Many swear by its ability to reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. This is because the oil helps to strengthen the walls of capillaries that are near the surface of the skin.
One of the many things that people love about this oil is that it is non-greasy and easily absorbed into the skin. It makes a great, non-staining massage oil, too. If you like, you may add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, and you will have a wonderfully scented, natural product that won't irritate your skin.
There are many oils that have moisturizing and anti-aging properties, including sweet almond oil and jojoba oil, but grapeseed oil stands out because unlike oils that are derived from nuts, it is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.
What are some other uses for grapeseed oil? A simple body scrub can be made using one cup of coarse sea salt or raw sugar combined with 1/2 cup of oil. Again, feel free to scent your scrub with a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender or citrus, for a touch of aromatherapy.
Let's take another look at what grapeseed oil has to offer your skin:
  • Packed with vitamins E and C other anti-oxidants, grapeseed oil protects skin from the free radicals that can age your skin.
  • Proteins and amino acids nourish your skin and preserve collagen and elastin, making it ideal for aging skin.
  • It's anti-inflammatory properties and non-greasy texture make it ideal for acne-prone and oily skin.
  • Dabbing a bit of oil under your eyes can reduce the appearance of dark circles.
  • The oil is versatile, it can be used on its own as a moisturizer, or with salt to make a scrub or essential oils to make a non-greasy massage oil.
There is no need to buy over-priced beauty products with a bunch of filler ingredients that you don't need. Grapeseed oil is the perfect single-ingredient product you can use to create a simple and natural beauty routine.
