What You Need to Know About Braces

If you're considering getting braces or other types of orthodontic treatment, there are a few things you may be wondering. In this article we will cover some of the most common questions we get asked about getting braces.
Q: What kinds of orthodontic problems do braces fix?
A. Braces are used to fix two main problems:
1. Bad bites: Such as overbites, underbites and crossbites.
2. Crowded or crooked teeth (also referred to as malocclusion).
These problems could be a result of genetics, an accident or habits such as thumb sucking.
Q: Why should someone consider getting braces?
A. Aside from the benefit of creating a nice looking smile, braces can result in a healthier smile. If orthodontic problems are not corrected it can predispose one to dental health problems such as gum disease, tooth decay, jaw problems and even speech or chewing problems.
Q: How do braces work?
A. Braces are made of different parts that work together to place pressure on your teeth, moving them to the correct position over time. For more info on how braces work, check out our video or blog posting here.
Q: Does getting braces hurt?
A. Many people are concerned about how much pain they may be in from braces. But don't worry, getting braces doesn't hurt. The process of placing the braces on is painless, and after you've had them for a while you won't even notice them!
Q: How old does my child need to be to wear braces?
A. The age varies between individuals and the nature of the problem. The American Association of Orthodontists does recommend an orthodontic screening at age 7. By this age, several permanent teeth have already erupted in most children, allowing us to effectively evaluate your orthodontic condition.
Q. How long will I have to wear braces for?
A. This is a very common question at our office, and it's a hard one to answer. This is because each person's orthodontic treatment needs are different and no two mouths are ever the same. Generally though, most people wear braces for about two years.
Q. How much do braces cost?
A. It is impossible to give an exact cost for treatment until we have examined you. We will cover the exact cost and financial options during the your first visit.
Q. Are financing options available? How does my insurance work?
A. We have many financing options available to accommodate your needs and we will review these with you. We will also review your insurance policy and help to maximize your benefit and file your claims.
