Your Child's First Dentist Trip

The first five years of a child's life are the most important developmentally. The experiences your child has with the world during preschool years can negatively or positively impact them later in life. One experience that will greatly affect your child is their first trip to the dentist. It's your role as a parent to ensure that your child's first dental check-up is a positive experience for them.
First, create a positive environment in the home in relation to the dentist and oral hygiene. Make brushing their teeth fun and rewarding with games, songs, or prizes. Before your child's first trip to the dentist, talk about how exciting it is that they get to go to the dentist and how you're proud of them for being a "big boy" or a "big girl." Reading a picture book about the dentist is also a good way to familiarize children with the dentist and taking care of their teeth. If you have fears of the dentist, don't make them apparent; your child will pick up on more than you think.
Second, find a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentists understand that the foreignness of a dental office can be scary to children, and they'll patiently work with your child to make it less scary. They may also have a chest of toys for children at the end of a visit, which can positively reinforce the experience for the child.
Teaching your child good habits such as dental hygiene is crucial for their success in life. Guide them through their first dental visit to foster a positive attitude about going to the dentist.
