Faecal Incontinence - Causes Are Treatable

Faecal incontinence is less common than urinary incontinence but it still affects roughly 2% of the world's population. As a matter of fact, researchers believe that number is probably significantly higher but people suffering from this condition are less likely to be open to discussing it with their physician than persons with urinary incontinence.
Society has placed a stigma on this condition and sufferers don't want to be identified as belonging to this group. While there is an increasing acceptance of urinary incontinence and both discussion and treatment is becoming more and more mainstream, the stigma attached to "messing your pants" still remains.
As a result persons with this problem don't seek medical help and that's a real shame. Faecal incontinence by itself is not a disease but rather a symptom of an underlying condition. Often times those underlying conditions can be easily and quickly treated eliminating the continence problem.
This condition usually, but not always, develops in older people. In fact it is the leading reason for admissions into "old folks homes" and the current generation of "old folks" still feel the stigma. That may change as the Baby Boomers age as they as a group are more likely to seek help and drive improvements in treatment.
But the first step in dealing with faecal incontinence is admitting you have it to your doctor. Don't be embarrassed talking about the condition, your physician has seen it before and to them it is simply another problem of the human body that he or she is trained to correct.
He or she can run the tests to determine the cause or causes and then lay out a therapy plan of action to deal with it. There is no reason to live with this condition and the embarrassment that it can bring. Be proactive and you have an excellent chance to end the condition or at least make it manageable.
