Components Dealing With Sunless Tanning Products

By Haywood Hunter

Sunless tanning, also known as self tanning, involves the use of specific chemicals on the skin to produce a result that is similar to a suntan. This has become increasingly popular over the past few decades, beginning in1960s, following concern of health officials who linked sun exposure and use of tanning beds to health problems, such as skin cancer. There are a variety of sunless tanning products available on the market.

These are a healthy option for those who want to change their skin tone without compromising skin health by exposure to direct sunlight and ultraviolet rays. Goods are made in varying forms. The formula comes as lotions, creams, gels and sprays and should be applied directly to skin.

DHA, also known as dihydroxyacetone is an active ingredient in many of these formulas. When added to skin, the chemical is able to temporarily darken the tone. This change cannot be washed off, however, it does fade with time and the shedding of skin. Generally these temporary tans last for days up to weeks. It all depends on the quality of the product and the overall usage. Most formulations do not contain any ingredients that offer sun protection and therefore are not designed for outdoor application or use.

There are also carotenoid-based formulas. These are believed to be highly effective because they include beta-carotene, which is permanent and natural. Carotenoids are present in many vegetables and fruits. This is what gives them their natural coloring. Other chemicals found in these formulas include Tyrosine and Afamelanotide.

There is also the option of consuming tanning pills that often include some amount of beta-carotene, which does not have reported adverse effects. Still, excessive intake of pills has been know to create and unattractive orange or yellow hue in skin tone. These products may also include canthaxanthin, which is thought to be very unhealthy in large doses and the cause of skin turning orange and hive developing.

Using bronzers is another way to get temporary results. Bronzers also come in many forms, including gels, powders, moisturizers, lotions, mousses and sprays. Ingredients found in these formulas may also be added to different types of make-ups. Bronzing is typically a more subtle way to darken skin and give a natural glow.

In general, this technique is considered safer than alternatives that involve exposure to UV rays. They are effective at providing a natural and even tan, but only if they are applied correctly. Some tips for application: exfoliate before adding the product, use a light touch so that it is applied more evenly, apply the formula to the top of the hands last and give liquid-based products appropriate time to dry.

Sunless tanning products allow individuals to change or improve the appearance of their skin with a low risk of developing a health issues, such as skin cancer. The formula is available as a pill, or can be applied topically as a gel, spray, cream or lotion. Most of these products do not include any form of sun protection. The results cannot be washed off the skin, but they will gradually fade with time.
